Modeling a Different Kind of Politics: Over 1100 GBIO Leaders Meet the Four Gubernatorial Candidates |
On October 17, 2010, over 1100 leaders from the African-American, Christian, Haitian, Jewish, and Muslim Communities came together to stand on common ground and to demand a different kind of politics from the four gubernatorial candidates. President Reverend Hurmon Hamilton gave an extraordinary speech on the American promise of liberty, religious freedom, and justice for all. GBIO Leaders followed his cue, urging the candidates and our membership to sign an interfaith pledge on religious freedom, and requesting the candidates to speak to the value of religious freedom and tolerance in their closing remarks. Next, GBIO's four panelists sought commitments from the four candidates on the issues of youth violence, the plight of the Haitian earthquake refugees, and usury. To act on a different kind of politics that prioritizes the state of MA, the four candidates also stood together with GBIO to vote NO on Ballot Questions 2 & 3. (The joint statement is below.) Rev. Dan Smith concluded the night by invoking the image of a "city upon a hill", which we GBIO, in all of our diversity, have been seeking to build.
